NM 8 — Terrain & Hunt Character NM 8 spans nearly 600,000 acres across a dramatic elevation range (5,000–10,700 ft), from low-country desert and piñon-juniper scrub to high alpine forests. Only about one-quarter of the unit is public land — the remainder is private ranch and state land, though some private acreage opens to hunters through unitization agreements during hunting seasons. Access can be challenging. Much of the lower-elevation terrain is arid, with limited reliable water outside of private cattle operations; drought conditions in recent years have stressed natural water sources on public land.
