CO 56 Tactical Analysis. Terrain & Access CO 56 spans rugged, high alpine country from 7,000 to over 14,000 feet across 152,000 acres. Three-quarters of the unit is public land, offering genuine access to vast stretches of national forest and BLM terrain. The extreme elevation range creates distinct micro-zones: lower forested drainages support traditional elk habitat and stalking opportunity, while the upper elevations transition to open alpine and above-treeline country where elk spend significant time but glassing and sitting become less effective.
