Nearly all the unit (96%) is public land, primarily national forest where mountain goat habitat dominates the high country. The extreme elevation spread—nearly 7,000 vertical feet—creates accessible lower drainages and demanding alpine terrain where goats concentrate on cliff faces and rocky slopes above timberline.
