Unit CO 137 — Tactical Analysis. Terrain & Access CO 137 spans 370,000 acres across the Huerfano and Purgatoire River drainages of south-central Colorado, ranging from 4,384 to 5,662 feet. Topography is moderate-to-steep foothill and lower-mountain terrain with mixed pinyon-juniper, ponderosa, and aspen cover. Only 13% of the unit is public land, making access a serious constraint—much of the huntable ground is private. Successful hunters typically scout early, build relationships with landowners, and focus on the public holdings near the unit boundaries.
